I Am Art Guatemala Fall 2014 was a HUGE success! Athentikos partnered with CMT (http://CMTGuatemala.org) and Hope for Guatemala (http://hopeforguatemala.org) to empower at-risk children in zone 18 of Guatemala City, a red zone known for crime and gang violence. We built upon 5 years of previous camps to develop a curriculum called “Discovering your story”, that explores authenticity in community. Our goal was to empower these children to see themselves as beautiful art of the I AM, filled with purpose in God’s greater story. This video highlights major themes of the week. Our goal is to help each child find the art within so they can change the way they view the world around them. This changes their course. This changes their community. This changes EVERYTHING. Empower an at-risk chil...

Colorful and inviting, Casa Chinkara is a modern architecture project envisioned by SOLISCOLOMER and located in a lush forest environment near Guatemala City, Guatemala. The building is associated by the architects with “a rock embedded in the landscape, an ethereal element that follows the order of the contour lines of the terrain. This rocky volume has been sculpted in such a way that it allows for light to come in through a skylight and for the different spaces in the inside to flow right out into the natural landscape.” An impressive art gallery is the highlight of the house, imagined as an intimate space for contemplation. Wow! During Holy Week here in Lake Atitlan, the most amazing "street carpets" are created by hand and they last only HOURS before they are destroyed by the marching feet of the processions. Here is our blog on this event. http://freetirement.weebly.com/blog/street-carpets-in-panajachel
Guatemala has one of the highest child homicide rates in the world. With a murder rate 800 percent higher than the US, many of the country's children endure life in rough neighbourhoods with high levels of poverty, drugs and violent crime. Given that many of the chldren are experiencing trauma similar to that found in conflict zones, one aid group believes photography may offer the capital's youth an escape from the violence. Al Jazeera's David Mercer reports from Guatemala City.
